Thought I'd get a thread started on the different kinds of mono. When I was running the charter and party boats, we used only Ande mono. I still think Ande makes some fine mono even though I've found another brand I think is the best ever. It's Sufix Seige. Softest mono I've ever used! Also one of the cheapest. They also make several varieties of mono plus braid. I spool my two river rods with the 8# Sufix Seige in smoke green color. I spool my one and only surf rod with 12# Sufix Seige. I just bought 3000 yards of 8# from Amazon.com for $45.55. That included shipping. I've tried other brands including Stren and Trilene but they are too stiff and wiry to suit me. A commercial pompano fisherman told me about the Sufix many years ago and I've used it since. When buying the line also look for the smallest diameter line. The diameter will be listed in thousandths on the label such as .011 or .012, etc. Another thing to look for is the ability to hold a good knot. After fishing a while, take a close look at your knots and see if they are still pulled tight.

When I was mangrove fishing this past summer, I got broke off a few times while using 12# Sufix Seige on my mangrove rod. I bought a spool of 20# Stren. It would not stay on the spool! I tried the Zebco brand called Cajun Line and the same thing happened. So I went back to the 12# Sufix Seige. Walmart was carrying the Sufix but I see they dropped it. Dick's does carry it as well as Bass Pro.

Let's hear some feedback on your favorite mono. We've already discussed braid a while back.

I would love to give my 2 cents but I don't use it. I only use braid and fluorocarbon leader.

Excellent post Bob I will definitely give Sufix Seige a try... I have been using braid for a few years on my inshore boat, but with my new Kayak I am now going to be using 12lb test and I want the cast to go as far as it can, and then line to be invisible to the inshore skinny water fish.

The only time use mono in the past ten years is for spec fishing. Well I actually use it every time I fish as backing for braid. My favorite mono is stren original in 6 or 8 lb in lo vis green. I also had a lot of the same issues with mono. The softer the better. I will have to give the Sufix Seige try.

  5. Thanks Bob. That smoke green is nice color whether the fish are line sensitive or not. For most I use Power Pro or P-Line braid with or without mono or fluorocarbon leader. With that set up my reels work better even if some time passes before their use, no memory issues, and less re-spools. Of course keeping them stored indoors out of the sun. Certain light artificials and plugs requiring deeper presentations or fall rates puts the reel(s) w/mono on the deck. Great topic that everyone can share and benefit. WTG

I was heading out today to pick up some line for a couple of rods. I'll try the seige. 8 lb in the lake due to bigger bass and catfish or I'd just use the 6 lb like all my speck rods.
    Great post.

I like 12 lb for the river and shinny for the Kayak

I like Braid better than Mono..Smaller dia than Mono for the same lb test line. I use yellow so my tired eyes see the line better..I also like Stren for the fresh water brooks I fish back home, 2 to 4lb...

  13. For throwing topwater plugs I swear by 14lb Stren Monofilament line in clear/blue.

These days I'm mostly using 20lb braid but I love using Trikfish leader...mono or flurocarbon doesn't matter.
