OK So do Gooney birds or teasers really work?

Mono works better on Dolphin, BUT, you will loose some rigs on Wahoo, Kings, and Sailfish..

How To Make a Mono Ballyhoo Pin Rig

I like the wire going through the crimp, hook eye, and back around through the crimp. and I also like to burn the Mono end.

How To Pin Rig a Ballyhoo onto your Pin Rig

 

Here is my list of what I use for rigging ballyhoo

• Offshore Angler Bait Spring
• 130 lb Fluorocarbon Leader
• 150 lb Mono
• 1.6 crimp Double Sleeves
• 1.3 crimp Double Sleeves
• #9 wire
• 130 LB pro power swivels (small loop)
• #9/0 hooks
• 3/8 and 1/2 egg sinkers
• Lighter = used to bur mono ends
• Crimping Tool
• Offshore Angler Bead Chain Rigs
• Bait Rigging Tool – use to pull beads through bait

• Badge clips looped on a rod to hold = used for holding leader rigs neatly on the boat.

 

Also Note: when trolling without outriggers, you sold be using some flat-line click, this will hole you line town closer to the water, and the bait will swim better.

Remember you are trolling your lines in a V pattern, the center rode is your shotgun line the furthest back from the boat, the two side pole lines are your post and starboard and will be at the bottom of your V, your bait will jump and not swim right without flat-lines clips attached to your stern.

I use three of these

This one is about 12 years old, they last forever if you lube them.
I made mine from regular outrigger clips, just cut off the looped pins, and use mono with crimps like these. because you can get two for around $12.00 vs one for $17.00...

Here I used a rigging needle and spiral looped it around a nail punch and made a pig tail to clean out the guts of a Ballyhoo

Here I used an aluminum arrow, cut it in half and V'ed the tip by cutting with wire snips.

This can be used to debone the Ballywhoo
and to pop out the eyes, two tools in one.

OK So above you see the many ways you can rig your Ballyhoo baits.

Now which do you use?

Here is the dilemma most face:
If you are fishing Ballyhoo for Dolphin you use Mono leader.
If fishing for Wahoo you use Wahoo copper wire leader.

So what happens if your are fishing for Dolphin and you are using Mono leader and a Wahoo slams your bait? Well if it strikes right on your hook, you have a good chance if reeling it in, but it still can shake it's head and cut your leader with it's teeth.

So here is a good alternative;
Use the above 49-Strand 270# Stainless Steel flex Cable on your 9/0 Weedless Ballyhoo Rig (like shown above),



Or use the Offshore Angler Bead Chain Rigs (as shown above) and have the teeth protection for your Wahoo and other tooth predators, while still using your Mono leaders.



99% of the time the teeth will land on the hook or rig leader and not on your Mono leader. So there is no reason to use an all wire Wahoo leader.

So what are your thoughts on these rigs?
