Minn Kota Repair And Casting Platform

Wife’s out of town and too windy to fish…
So it’s time to get some projects out of the way. Repaired the Minn Kota electric and did my first carbon fiber project.
The trolling Motor started making some odd noises at the highest speeds a few weeks ago. I planned to take it apart and check the seals and bearings. When I removed the prop I found the sheer pin had rusted in place and I couldn’t get it out and I couldn’t even get it drilled out. I broke about 12 bits trying to drill that pin from both directions and wasn’t making much headway. So I went ahead and added to my order for Minn Kota and got a whole new armature assembly along with the seals, bearings, gaskets, and O-rings. That package arrived just in time this week. That disassembly and repair was easy and straightforward but when I tried to screw on the prop nut I found that the threads at the very end were messed-up and incomplete. ugh! Fortunately the trusty tap & die set earned its keep and I was soon back in business.
I’ve been wanting to fabricate some sort of casting platform for the front of my Savannah to span the gunnels and cover the go LI battery that’s stowed up there. Also gives me space to slide a couple Plano 3600 boxes. 1/2” foam sandwiched between 3 layers of 2x2 carbon fabric on each side seems to have done the trick. I’m getting almost no deflection over the 28” span. That Carbon look is cool but I think I’m going to order some marine-mat for it. Might get too slick and hot in the sun otherwise.
