    this thread was about Dolphin "Finn's" sounds to me like he was talking about a Dolphin, not total combined.

    in either case, the rest of his post was about how easy blue water trolling is compared to his bottom fishing skills.

    I have yet to meet any angler who believes that trolling is easy with no skill involved? correct me if I am wrong?

    Although anyone can drag lines and catch a Dolphin, trolling is a skill and takes a lot of effort to bait, rig, keep you lines free of weeks etc.

    It is all about expectations. If you like to "fish" you can go cast a line off a bridge or beach and call it a great trip. Or you can spend 3 days prepping ahead of time and work hard at achieving the success that you want. There is no way to escape that there are different levels of fishing and all work to an extent. It is up to the person to decide to what extent he or she wants to fish - are they happy with a few laughs, sunburn, and maybe a fish in the box vs the guy who comes home grumpy if he doesn't have a limit of "trophy fish".

    I kind of envy the dude who just goes and somehow catches fish - like they are a gift from God. Life is a lot simpler and the grass is greener everywhere.

    You talking apples and oranges, bridge vs trolling. The info posted above about temp, algae boom, dead vs alive, etc… are the gospel for pelagic fishing. I will add the water columns also plays a roll, as well as do not troll during full moons or you will get nothing.

    You will be a lot happier if you grab a beer and follow the above guidelines, than have some laughs. Navigating open water without the above targets will get you nothing but an empty tank. I doubt any angler that follows and uses good knowledge will go home grumpy… but the ones that don’t will.

    The fact is, most on the forum learn the productive ways to fishing, we are locals and try to give good sound productive advice.
    When most go offshore trolling lines, if the fish are not around, (which they are not always around) they have a second backup plan called hit the bottom on the way back for some meat. Now that’s another topic which has been discussed many times. Heck all this has been discussed many times.

    You can lead a horse to water but you cannot make it drink. This club is all about sharing what you’ve learned, as that one guy said, there is a lot of impressive knowledge in this thread, and I doubt you can find another that will divulge as much productive cut through the chase info anywhere else.

    my time and money are to valuable to be dragging open water, so I go for the targeted places. Tight lines and Good luck to all.

    Great post, Rich. I was a happier fisherman when I wasn't so concerned about sizes or numbers of fish. Hell, these darned shrimp have kept me from fishing for almost two months... really need to get out and wet some hooks.

    Yeah I remember you when you and Myrna first fished next to me on the river, I was on my Kayak and you were on your boat with a pole with a broken tip LOL You've learned a lot since those days. Glad you took some good equipment and rigging advice :) I know for a fact you are much happier now than back then LOL

    Thanks Sam even though I rarely fish for dolphin because I used to do so much as a kid(it seemed mindless for hour upon hour waiting for a knockdown) I never gave much though to anchoring next to weed line and target multiple targets such bottom dwellers while you are waiting for the dolphin to come through good post

    Thanks AJ, glad someone picked up on that... Just don't do it during a full moon, because the Dolphin were up all night feeding and will not bite during the day... I sat over a bloom once and watch the Dolphin swimming by the boat, even looking up at us, would not take any bait at all... they came up and looked the bait over and just swam away.... I wish I had a harpoon or crossbow at that range...

    Hey capt. Question about anchoring up on the seedling? You said you drop a bottom rig as well, do you notice weed lines forming near some natural bottom structure for some reason or are you catching bottom fish of sand per say?

    not to the bottom, just down below the boat where the fish are, looking at the fish finder. 20 - 30 feet down?

    You just said something about snappers and grouper in an earlier post and it had me wondering. I'm assuming those catches are only when weeds happen to be over good bottom?

    While fishing for Mahi Mahi, I also catch Wahoo, Kings Fish, Sailfish, just under the boat and weed line, while catching Grouper, Red Snappers, and other bottom fish… which if you were trolling around the weed line all day, all you would be catching is the fish leaking around the weed lines…

    In your first post when you unlocked the vault.

    Ok you threw me off when you said Anchoring...

    I do not Anchor up at a weed line....weed lines are moving around like if you were drifting, so while fishing under a weed line, "not trolling" for Mahi Mahi, you will catch Wahoo, Kings Fish, Sailfish, just under the boat and weed line, while catching Grouper, Red Snappers, and other bottom fish just up off of the bottom as the weed line is moving, I keep my rigs up off of the bottom around 20ft...
