yup the thread is about old school lights... and anything works... I can cut a stake with a butter knife, but that does not make it a shake knife? The fact is the difference between a true shrimp light is that a shrimp light is buoyant and floats and a fish light sinks... Also the technique of having the lights away from the boat is more productive.

I have two gators and One I purchased from Strikezone in Melbourne. They work great BUT I did build my own after owning these others. My Underwater light was basically reasearched through EBAY waterproof connectors, clear PVC etc.... It is twice as long as my Purchased lights and It does work good BUT my time is so limited and the cost equal the ones I bought.I probably just buy more Gators in the future ALTHOUGH I am proud of my 30" MONSTER green light!

I've used everything from Coleman lanterns to LED's and had some success with all. These days my lite of choice is LED for low battery drain and not too bright tokeep from straining my eyes. Green produces less eye strain but I haven't found the shrimp to care either way. I do like them suspended out of my dipping zone.

I did the same use to tie lanterns to the docs but have learned better ways over the years

Ace250 might want to try and build a few yourself. Can be a nice project. As Nautical Gator mentioned early on, not going to save much money if any but it's fun! Good Luck!

Thanks for the info. I remember growing up using above the water lights, a bulb under a reflective hood that hooked onto the boat railing. Good memories.

Great read. I remember shrimping on the Titusville pier with the hooded rental lights tied off the the railing, walking the maze of dip nets X'ing the pier. My first green light was a 12v halogen light siliconed in a green bottle...lol

I bought 2 green premade led lights. Sounds like I just need to throw them in the water and see if they work. Thanks for all the great info.

  13. Thanks for the link to the ball weight. I have been looking.

Does anyone have a good recommendation for setting up underwater lights on a paddleboard?
