You can get pipe plugs in plumbing ace or Home Depot or lows.
The seals are made with stainless steel metal instead of plan steel and will not rust. I rebuilt my 175 OEM out drive years ago. I purchased all the seals and bearings from motion industry instead of buying a kit. Much cheaper. You have to know how to determine the part numbers by measureing if you can't read it on the old part. With the internet you can learn how to measure seals and bearings and o-rings. You need a good dial or digital veneer calipers. Micrometer, depth and inside Mike even better, but getting deeper into measuring equipment. You can do most everything close enough with a caliper. You can measure outside, inside and depth. Look up how much they are, then go to a pawn shop. They almost always have them. I would suggest a digital. They are easer to read and switch between metric and standard. With this tool you can determine information needed to determine part numbers and don't need to buy expensive kits. You can buy everything on line or call motion. Nice thing about them is if you can't figure a part number they will help using your demension. I do this all the time at work for rebuilding units we have no idea where they came from 30 years ago. Draw back is you have to disassemble, measure, buy parts. The plus is you buy what you need for less than $50 bucks compared to $250 bucks.
For any DIY out there I suggest you look into getting yourself a digital veneer calipers. Determining the size of something can save you a lot if money, time and heartache.

Okay, the seal is rubber of course. The spring and metal are stainless steel. I was referring to the ones on your cylinder rods.
Looks like the kit has spring retainers also. Should be able to size them also and get from motion industry. Although $18 bucks I think I would just go with the kit.

Remove the trim cylinder tube and now need to remove the end caps and it is on tight.

The inside piston shaft turns, but it is stiff, needed to use a PVC pipe to twist in round.

I was able to remove the inside ring, now soaking with PB Blaster, hoping that it loosens it up some?

Nice...once you slide the other end off it's a matter of changing the O-rings out....Take your time.

OK I needed to get the end cap unfrozen and get if off of the shaft.

So I had to put it back on the lower units out-drive, then put a PVC pipe in through the busing housing so that I could get some leverage when twisting and pulling it off while twisting at the same time. it Backed out pretty easily like that.

    P7180652.JPG

I then needed to get the lower piston out, so I used my air compressor and blew some air through the hose opening on the cylinder hole, while pointing it down into a bucket so it would not shoot out across the yard like a cannon LOL It came right out with the compressed air.

NOTE: (I'm glad I pointed it into the bucket) or it would have traveled far.

Not out of the water yet!

Although I removed the Mercruiser Bravo 3 Trim Cylinder Rams 98704a26 And 98703a26 end caps and internal parts, it seems that there was some corrosion and pitting on the inside where the top outer seal sits, so instead of risking it leaking,

    upload_2017-7-18_9-43-8.png

I ordered the below Sierra International 18-2373 Trim Cylinder End Cap.

I will use the new gasket kit on the port side of the Mercruiser Bravo 3 Trim Cylinder Rams, since I am using a new Sierra International 18-2373 Trim Cylinder End Cap on the starboard side.

and as a plus, it comes with all the internal and external o-rings and seals.

Good decision Gator. You don't want to go through all this and have it leak/fail.

OK I received the Sierra International 18-2373 Trim Cylinder End Cap
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000N9LOBW/?tag=shrimpflforum-20

I was please to see the quality of the Sierra International 18-2373 Trim Cylinder End Cap which looks to now be made of Bronze, instead of the Aluminum like the OEM was.
Wiped off the shaft and parts, lubed with gear lube, and installed the Sierra International 18-2373 Trim Cylinder End Cap which came with the seals installed on it, but I still needed to replace the seals on the lower cap and spring unit.

OK I finished the Rebuilding of my Starboard side MerCruiser Bravo 3 Trim Cylinder Rams 98704A26 and 98703A26 a

Started raining, so I will have to wait until a better time to install it back on to the outdrives lower unit and fill with gear lube and bleed the lower unit system then make sure all is working properly.
I still need to rebuild the post side of my outdrives lower unit.

Both the Port and Starboard sides, from start to finish.

    PART 2 POST SIDE

After taking off the Port side and looking inside the Trim Cylinder End Cap, I see some of the same corrosion as there was on the Starboard side, so I am going to play it safe and order another new Sierra International 18-2373 Trim Cylinder End Cap
