    T-3.5 days til hunting time.

Sunday, went in about 10 and saw guys leaving the woods. Not much people sign down where I've been looking. The guys leaving had been seeing deer around 0800 and another had been bumping them early and late where I saw 1 during scouting...that is an evening spot.

Cam 1 had this guy on there 4 or 5 times during morning hours over the past week.

Also had does in there most mornings, so this is target spot #1.

Target spot #2 was disappointing - 1 legal deer and 2 turkeys all week.

Target Spot #3 - hung a camera over an area of heavy tracks in a swamp - we'll see how that pans out.

My hardest decision for Friday morning will be how to access hunt spot #1. The two options are:

1 going thru burn and walking straight down thermals/into predicted wind, this is as easy as it gets - the fear is bumping deer feeding in burn that may come by stand.

    or

2 by circling around swamp and coming in where the thermals will be pulling my wind into the swamp, this is about twice the walk - the promise is that I won't bump possible deer in burn area. Downside is that the deer will cross my trail as they work their way into the swamp and bedding.

Once the thermals start blowing uphill and the east wind starts blowing from east to west, I'll be good. Just that transition time.

Thinking to put my stand cross elevation and closer to small filed, which may draw the thermals early on and keep my scent from fanning out where the deer are going - if they come in before the thermals switch and the morning breeze starts.

Sounds like you are considering the important factors. Hard to give advice without knowing the area. I’ve found over the years that I seem to have better success keeping my path to the stand as direct as possible as long as I’m not going through a spot that they are targeting to feed or bed down. I sweat like crazy too, so for me making a big long loop to get to my spot could raise the stink level and defeat the purpose... Walking directly into the wind will limit your scent dispersion, while it sounds like making a big circle will be spreading it over a much larger area. I often jump deer right behind my cabin while walking in to my stand but I try to go in an hour before sunrise. I use a red light and usually can watch them spook and just move off 20 or 30 yards instead of high-tailing it over the ridge toward the next county... I’ve jumped them right at my stand and also had them just move off a short distance and move back in again after I’m in place and quiet for 15 minutes or so. It’s like if they don’t actually see what you are or get your scent then they go about their business.
I used to squirt cover scent on my boots like fox or deer urine, tinks, etc. Over the years ive seen so many deer and the reactions that I no longer use anything. Deer(and other animals) have an immediate reaction when coming across my trail if anything had been on my boots. It very often turns them around, or at the least they are more alert and looking for that other deer, etc. I’ve occasionally watched them follow my trail but much more alert and skittish while doing so. Leather boots with no scent has a worse result with them getting spooked right away from what I’ve seen. Once I switched to rubber bottom boots I watch them feed right over my trail without even blinking or looking up.
In the dark, I put far more effort in to being careful that I don’t touch any branches or brush with my hands or clothes, than I spend trying to keep my steps quiet. I can’t remember if you are hunting public land or not but I think getting in and setup early, well before anyone else that might be near, will be a plus.

What zone are you hunting? I was trying to look up the FL calendar and did not realize there are so many zones down here. Will you be out with a bow, muzzleloader or centerfire?
I’m going nuts waiting to get in the woods. I’ve missed most of the bow season but hopefully will get back to N Ga by the end of the week. Maybe I can get a week in before blackpowder opens. Haven't been able to do any real scouting this year which is at least half the fun.

We have a whole bunch of wildlife management areas with diff regulations. It is an archery hunt and I'm in the 2nd hunt which runs Friday thru Thursday.

I'm considering just making this hunting place "my own" and not trying to hunt too many places - there are some deer, limited hunters, limited access - can walk 3-4-5 miles 1-way if you want to get away from the crowd. All ads up to more work and maybe more deer. I might snag a permit every 2 or 3 years but if can get archery one year, ML the next, Rifle the next, then repeat. Probably have a hunt each year, which would be fine. It is too hot to really have fun scouting or even hunting half the time down here. Yesterday it was 90+ and I walked 4+ miles with a pack. As always, came out soaking wet - actually toweled off when changing. LOL! This is a crazy state.

You mirror what my hunting partner said - he wants me to enter through an overgrown road thru the burn (ankle to knee high grass in road and waist high grass , palmettos, etc in the burn area) and head directly/straight line to the stand site from the road, into the proposed wind direction. He also wants me into the stand by 05:00 to give any deer in the area time to forget they heard a "bulldozer" pushing thru the palmettos. This would be my first "real" buck on public land if he comes thru when I'm there. Again - the concern is that the deer are feeding out there or will follow or cross my scent/trail coming towards the stand...

You do have a point about the scent being spread thru a larger area walking around the swamp - there have been guys going past every day, but heading to a field down the way.

Wearing 18-inch rubber boots, put Evercalm on them - works well in GA, have walked thru feed area and turned around to watch deer feed where I just walked - just not in waist high grass.

Hope you can get back up north and enjoy some of the fall weather. You know where the deer should be, and a little fine-tune scouting is always necessary after the season opens...

Yeah, I can’t even go out in the garage down here for 10 minutes this time of year without sweating
Main reason I haven’t explored my hunting options.
Same in GA regarding public land and getting away from the crowds. Your average hunter wont go 200 yards from their truck and ATVs aren’t allowed on National Forrest or the WMAs. I don't mind a long hike but the few times I did get a deer on public land I soon regretted it once dragging it up and down the mountain sides for a mile or more... I see now they sell portable deer wheelbarrows.
I screwed up big time before changing our residency to FL. I had planned to get a GA lifetime hunting/fishing license which is not all that expensive. Main thing was that it remained valid even if I was no longer a GA resident. I forgot. I remembered the day I went down and got my FL license. I immediately jumped online and found I had to do it by mail so printed the form and sent my check the same day. Too late! :knocking my head: States can’t even reliably keep up with citizenship and voting qualifications but they knew right away that I was no longer eligible for a GA hunting license even though I own a house and property in the state...
It’s going to be painful to buy that out-of-state license this month...
Good luck. Anxious to hear about your hunts.

Yeah, I feel your pain there almost worth changing it back for a while...

Yeah, I’ve been trying to think what would be involved and how I would be able to switch that residency again. Not sure how it would work since I’m dealing with tax issues for the houses and state income tax, etc.

Hope you guys can get out there and enjoy the hunts.

The heat is nuts, sweating is what will happen. No getting around it, even in the "cooler" months - last year it was 88-90 during my DECEMBER deer hunt. I know a guy who hunt in shorts & flip flops - really - he kills a lot of bucks too.

I do it all of the time and folks think that I'm crazy. OK maybe a little, Skeeters usually aren't to bad and I've been lucky with snakes.

You fished with Sam - have to be crazy! Hey, I went with you guys... TWICE! What does that say about me?

How do you like the ghost blinds? I've always wondered about using the window tinting stuff to make up one... Thought about using one out west but saw the wind hit one in a video and the whole thing came alive with movement... Can def see a use for them, just need the push over the edge.

    Thermacell? Can't beat it.

My buddy is all chiggered up and I'm chigger-free. Has to be the permethrin on the hunting pants...
