Before I retired from teaching in 2016 I used to visit my parents in New Smyrna Beach on winter breaks and fish the surf and Mosquito lagoon from a kayak. Upon retiring I had an Ankona Cayenne Flats boat built and have been spending my winters on Pine Island fishing the Pine Island Sound. In 2020 I sold the flats boat and had a sea pro 228 built with a 200hp Suzuki, trim tabs, a jack plate and dual power poles in order to get more people on the water. Although it is a much bigger boat it still gets pretty shallow and has allowed me to catch lots of snook, trout and redfish in Pine Island Sound. Hurricane Ian damaged the house I stay in on Pine Island badly enough that I cannot stay there this year. As a result, I decided to come back to New Smyrna Beach this year from January 5 through April 5. I am very excited to fish the area, with a boat, as well as learn a new area. I am also planning on trying my hand at shrimping. I built 4 lights just before I retired not realizing that shrimp are not caught on the west side by the method used on the east side, so I am looking forward to getting those lights wet. I am looking forward to putting up many posts on the forum this winter...

Sorry to hear about the damage to the Pine Island place, but will look forward to hearing about your adventures in NSB this winter. I usually fish Ormond surf but have a boat now and will be around Ponce trying new things there. Anxious to see how you do, so welcome and happy fishing!

Thanks...Have you done any boat or kayak fishing around the Tomoka Preserve area, Halifax river or Smith creek areas for Reds and Snook. I am interested in fishing those areas a bit in the winter when fish head to the creeks and backwaters to stay a bit warmer.

Sounds like a good plan. I’m sure you will find plenty of good places to fish. Will just take a while to figure it out and learn the area. Finding the deeper holes in the river or canals will probably be the trick in the cold weather.

Sorry, but no, I don't have a kayak and only recently bought a boat so haven't really explored those areas. I've rented kayaks and played around at the Tomoka Preserve, but that's about it. Maybe post your question in a new thread in the kayak section (or general fishing section) so others who may have tips for you will see it.

I have had to change houses this year also. The one I rented the past five years out on the beach-side down by JBs is not for rent this year and with Covid driving a lot of home owners out to their beach houses to work from home a lot of inventory came off the market. So I am using a house on the mainland owned by a friend who takes his family skiing in Colorado all winter. He and his wife were former ski instructors out there and he can run his business remotely. The kids are home schooled. I will actually be closer to the swope boat launch by the airport and my favorite spots in Spruce Creek and the main river/inlet areas.
I have never fished the Tomoka Basin and river areas but my research says that it is a good winter spot for the warmer water reasons.

Tomoka Basin is usually a hood spot for Trout in the winter months from what I hear. I’ve always wondered if the Snook that are up in the river hang out there in the deeper spots looking for warmer water during the cold months. High Bridge backwaters and marsh is just on the north side of the basin and it’s good for Redfish if you can get back there and find them.
