Hey guys. If you are planning a trip to Crystal River or Homosassa for scallop season don’t waste your time!
We spent a week over in Crystal River and bombed out.
    The scallops are not there.
FWC has Report on the count and Crystal River has a count of 2 scallops per 200 sq meters. Taylor county to the north is coming in with 22 per 200 sq meters, so I would go north if I were you.
    Good luck

I had heard the same thing as ken with only one person claiming to have got 4 gallons in 8' of water north of Crystal River. (I didn't see them). Both of my daughters are in the medical field and have said that there have been 4-5 cases of flesh eating bacteria in the Crystal River / Homosassa area so far this year. That is another reason that I'm not rushing to jump in the water.

Had two friends up there during the fourth. Both said the same thing that it’s tough getting limit. My one buddy had lots of people to look so they would have to work to get them. They had to go up by Keaton to find them but they were docked and staying in Steinhatchee. My other friend said the same thing was very slow..

That goes along with what I've heard also, I've heard that you had to go north of Steinhatchee because the water has been dark and hard to see anything.

I went out of Crystal River July 6 to try to run offshore for grouper fishing. However, the squall line was moving in pretty quick from the NW and I wouldn't have made it out before the front hit. The scallop fleet was out in full force between Homosassa and Crystal River. Looked like they were staying around 4' to 7' of water. All the idiots were there also. I decided to do some scouting instead. The front rolled in around noon in full force. The lightning was striking about three miles behind me and there were tons of idiots in overloaded boats heading out the channel straight into the storm. There wasn't a lot of scallops being reported at the Fort Island trail when I got back in. However, scallops do move and it's a lengthy season.

For me, I'm going to wait for a weekday to head out next time and try to avoid most of the idiots.

I believe they were out in deeper water but we did not scout deeper water
