My buddy Scott and I hit the dunlawton ramp at 5:45 and headed toward Ponce. The wind was already blowing some and the inlet was a little rough but once in open water not too bad. We were able to run 30mph almost all the way to the party grounds. Lots of flying fish on the way out.

We found some structure marking fish and "set the anchor" aka pushed a button on my new trolling motor. Lol. This was the first real try with it offshore and it worked really well. It made it so much easier without pulling the anchor. It also made it much easier to make adjustments to keep you over structure. Throughout the day we had the waves/wind pick up pretty good and it had no troubles keeping us where we wanted +/- 5 feet or so.

Within the first ten minutes I land a 16" mangrove snapper and thought here we go going to be a great day but that was the only fish to make it in the box all day. For whatever reason the bite was just slow. We set on top of spots with the fishfinder lit up and they were not willing to eat what we had. We had netted live mullet and pinfish the night before for live bait along with squid and sardines.

We caught our fair share of grunts, remoras, and a few red snapper but even those were few and far between. Spotted 2 large cobia that came behind the boat but they refused to bite the pinfish and squid we tried to feed them. Scott caught a nurse shark 3.5-4'. We stayed until around 3pm when the white caps showed up and we made the wet ride back to shore. I need to pack some goggles on board for those windy days. Lol. I did have my rain suit though.

I managed to delete my only picture of the mango. The largest red snapper weighed 12# on the boga. 20170617_141401.jpg 20170617_084616.jpg

You had me going with the Mango of the bat. Sorry that his buddies didn't join in.

Not a bad day at all Mike. That boat of yours is getting a real workout! Did you see any bait pods while you were out there?
The bottom fishing can be pretty poor this time of the year. It's really hit or miss, but it can be on if you hit the right spots. I've had better luck hitting spots that have alot of high relief structure, such as wrecks. Always seems like the barracuda. And bonito are hanging around those spots, and even though you can't eat em, they sure are alot of fun to catch.
Also water depth is more important in the summer. Of course that means longer trips out of the inlet.

Thank you Greg. I did not see any bait pods out there. There was wind chop all day so it was hard to easily spot them if they were out there. Still a fun day but I was suprised at how long it would take to get bites even with live bait.

Glad to hear that trolling motor worked out for you. Was not sure a trolling motor could work out offshore on a windy day. That is a nice Red Snapper you had to release due to it be so endangered. I guess you did not find that Sea Spirit secret spot from last w/e! Nice Report.

I am glad as well. Reading others reviews on it I was pretty confident. I did not find their secret spot that's for sure. Lol. Maybe next time. I forgot to mention that I did see what I think to be the critter fleet boat out there. They were on the west end of the party grounds.

    nice report Mike!
Glad the trolling motor is doing what you expected.
Sorry to hear bout the slow bite.
Nocatfish has good info. The summer brings in a thermocline. Not sure if its here yet. Shuts down bottom fishing when it's 55 degrees
on the bottom. Feel your baits when you reel em up. if they feel like you just pulled them from the cooler it maybe time to find
    higher relief = (taller structure)

Sounds good guys. Thanks for the suggestions. I will probably mix it up a little for next trip.

Perhaps go deeper and to the north or south where ever the thermocline break is. The thermocline usually shows up in July if at all.

I posted how to know where the thermocline and temp breaks should be.

    • Here you can do it all online by playing with color and zoom in on Lat & Lon factor to 32-78-1.5 etc... and then press the Submit button and you will see a new sst map. You can also remove those pixels contaminated by clouds by checking the "Cloud mask" checkbox. You can also modify the color palette by changing the Range (min/max), etc. Play with it until you get the image the way you like it... Hope this helps... Sam

Least you grabbed a few ! Great job. Its been a tough past week / two out here. Bottom is lit up with fish but they aren't moving much. Did you notice your live baits eyes turning grey after sending them down the bottom ? Its cold down there. Set up a chum bag and raise the mangs up. Thats been the trick over the past week. Cobia are showing up in the slick as well. Just be ready to be annoyed by the Kings and shark suckers. Theres been more Cobia over the past week and a half with the temp change then our entire "spring" run.

IThanks man. I did not notice the eyes turning grey. I remember looking at the surface temp a few times and it was around 77*.

Maybe its warming back up. Last week I dropped some pigfish down and they were cold to the touch and grey eyes. Pretty interesting.

Mike, surface temp is different than the bottom temp.
ask any diver that has jumped in the water off Ponce. It will be a clear 77 degrees for the 1st 30-50 ft. Then you hit a snot green layer of
water and it can drop by 20 degrees or more. With a good bottom machine you can see the thermocline.

Keep at it Mike. I have seen Mangroves the size of that ARS come up from out there. Just keep plugging away and it will happen to you sooner or later.
