She pulled in another 22" red south of dunlawton. Again, only decent bites were on cut pinfish. We probably saw at least 20 of them cruising at low tide back in the creek. Refused live pigfish and live shrimp only produced a few mangos for us. We caught a good sized pin on shrimp and cut it up for chunk bait. Great day out on the water.

Glad you got into some action! Was this the only red? [Not a live bait guy]: Why do you think they passed up the pigs? Size?

This was the only red. I'm really not sure why they passed up the pigs. We're pretty new to fishing altogether. Could be anything from their size, the way we hooked them (tried through the tail vs. through the mouth), or just flat out our presentation. Really looking to figure it out though! I haven't used artificials before. Recently purchased a small pack of gulp shrimp in new penny color. Hoping to give them a try sometime in this spot and see how they react. We usually free line cut bait and that consistently will pull at least one in the boat.

Nice red. Good luck figuring fish out. I havn't in 50 years of attempting to do so.
Still, it sounds like you're on the right track. Pigfish are a great trout bait. Cut mullet, pinfish, ladyfish or just about any other cut bait is a great way to attract redfish. They depend on sense of smell more so than alot of other species, so cut bait is a great way to get em.
Were you fishing the 10 mile creek area again? Thanks for the great report.

Thanks for the thoughts on the bait effectiveness.

I CAN give an opinion on arts, and your Gulp shrimp...Thumbsup1:::1 Good 1st choice...probably ought to be in everyone's kit, even nearshore, etc. It's just a good, convenient back-up plan, when you don't get the right live bait, aerator breaks, etc. etc. And you can catch more than just reds with 'em (trout, snook, flounder, mangroves, etc.) You can cast around with them and slow-twitch em along the bottom...or, you can cast and let it sit. I do both... I slide one of those Gulps over the hook (wide gap worm hook, usually weightless, unless I'm working in stronger current...rig it weedless, so less likely to get hung up). I've always thought the Gulps in the jar are more productive than the ones in the small packs, but that's anecdotal.

I'll leave it at that, for now. I'm sure you'll get some more opinions on artificials soon.

If you want to get a jump on arties, you can thumb-through my and the Nasty Hooker's threads. We fish strictly artificials (look in the kayak section). Pick out what you think you can blend into your own desired style, and give it a go!

    Tight lines.

  6. Nice redfish, it really seems like they are really starting to push into the river finally.

Yeah...now that you mention it, I think I've heard that.

Stick with what works. A+ for trying multiple angles until you found what worked. Always change it up!
