Just a quick report as we really had a very slow day offshore. Launched from Swoopes at daybreak with my fishing friends Robbie and Crunch. Strong incoming tide as it was a new moon. Winds were light out of the SE with VERY short interval waves out of the SSE around 2 and a half feet. Nothing like the previous flat seas of my last report.
Got pretty beat up heading out so we stopped at site 12 and dropped anchor. Immediately started catching grunt after grunt on a mixture of squid and cut bait. Both Crunch and myself caught bookend banded rudderfishes that proved to be the biggest two fish of the trip. After a couple of hours we pulled anchor and 20170821_081920.jpg 20170821_143707.jpg headed two miles further out to the tug wreck on site 3.
Once again nothing but grunts and small ARS...sigh. Moved a couple of times, but absolutely nothing but grunts and small ARS. I did have something cut my line at the hook on the flatline...probably a king, so we decided to do a bit of trolling. Slow trolled a couple of baits and a spoon, but once again nothing. We did see a couple of Spanish Mackerel feeding frenzies, but once again, they didn't want to play either. After an hour we gave up and headed back in.
I'm chalking our bad luck up to the eclipse, even though we were back at the ramp well before the event. I think the fish were scared off by the disappearing sun.
It really was one of the slowest days I have ever had offshore. Oh well, you can't win em all.
    Thanks for reading folks.

Worth a check anyway. Better to go and enjoy the leisure than to find out it was gangbusters from someone else.

At least the eclipse doesn't happen that often. Thanks for the report.
