As Nathan mentioned. The port parking lot was full at 6AM. I knew about the tournament but needed to run the Patay Wagger after making some engine repairs.
We headed out and we were greeted by the helicopter taking pics of all the boats leaving the inlet. Just my son and myself, I think I'll have to buy the heli photo when they send it this time.
He circled us twice as we crushed the waves leaving the port.

Now the report. Um, don't drop the cobia. Don't drop the cobia. Don't drop the cobia!!!!!
We ran to several spots to sabiki bait w/poor results. There were 4-6 boats on every spot-craziness! We ran deeper and caught a few pins/grunts. Now in 90 ft of water. While we're dropping sabikis my son says "Dad SHARK!" I look over and it's a nice cob.
I grap the rod w/cobia jig. Drop it in, he swims up and turns his nose to it... I am now telling my son to put on a fighting belt while I grab another rod and hook a 4" grunt on it. I hand him the rod and it's game on! The fish came to the boat rather quickly. I gaffed him. Nicked posed for a photo and then all hell broke loose! We did get the fish in the box but the cockpit looked like a murder scene. His 1st cobia. He did good!
We trolled out to 800 and then back into the cones w/only 1 p-nut dolphin to show for it.
Swung over to City service tanker and got in line with the other 4 boats drifting the wreck.
Hooked up several times to only loose jigs and straighten hooks! Damn there are some monster AJ's on that thing.
Rain, rain, rain on the way in. New curtains rock! We ran by several boats creeping along while we were cruising 30mph.

all that blood from 1 cobia, wow. Nice to see you got back and the water and sounds like your engine problem is fixed if you cruised in at 30 mph! Hopefully some nice weather show up soon.

Bob, the gaff shot was right in the heart. The cobia bled out while thrashing the cockpit. We slid him into the deck box an high-fived for a job well done!

That is one fat Cobia. Congrats to your son. I certainly hope that you made him clean the boat! Any trip that involves a fat Cobe on the deck is as great trip in my book.

Dang nice Cobia, and wow what a blood bath. Looks like a scene from a horror show. Missing you guys already. In Ct for summer. And glad your boat is back up and running. I have a small 14 foot Crestline center console up here and darn if it won't start. You know the drill.
