Well I finally broke my dry spell. A couple weeks ago I was scouting and found a great spot that I felt would produce. I decided to hunt this spot Monday afternoon because the wind was blowing from a good direction. I mainly wanted to see just what kind of activity was going to be working its way thru. Monday afternoon I had 6 does and yearlings come by with 3 bucks. I passed on the bucks to let them grow a little. I decided to take off work this morning because I had something to do. I thought that I'd give it another try and went back to that same spot. I wasn't planning to stay to long and only able to hunt this morning. I had just climbed down and only took 2 steps away from the stand when I spied a doe staring at me. We had a stand off for seemed like 5 minutes then she walked towards me about 12-15 feet away. She didn't spook just turned around and walked back to where she had come from. During our stand off I spied a buck walking in the woods behind her. Also during the stand off with the doe several deer started walking in. Suddenly I had 5 deer at only 15 yards. The buck was following them in and as he stepped out into the opening he looked at me, I got the big eyed look. I decided that if I was going to shoot I better do so quick. When I shot the woods erupted with deer running everywhere. I walked over to where I shot him and there was hair everywhere. I thought to myself "This isn't good" I shouldn't see this much hair. But how could I miss he was only 15 yards away. I had watched him run off out of sight and had a good pin point on where I last saw him. I started walking in the direction that he had run. I didn't see any blood until I had walked about 25 yards then I saw a small drop of bright red blood. (good) As I was walking to the last place I had seen him a couple of deer jumped up and run off. I'm thinking great this is going to be a long trail but as I walked up to the place the deer had gotten up I saw him laying there. From start to finish he only went about 50 yards. I Also took some other pictures Monday that I had some time to be creative. The scope picture took some time and was tricky to get lined up. He was a 5 point that had no brow tines.

Nice deer, congrats! Usually i dont find blood for 25 yards with a muzzleloader, must have to do with the velocity. What powder and bullets are you shooting?

I use pydex powder 100 grains and powerbelt bullets. (I know they don't have the best penetration) But at 15 yards really?

Yes do a search online for people using Powerbelts - you'll read plenty of horror stories to make you want to try something new. I use Hornady SST, buddies shoot T/C Shockwaves, both are really good bullets. I've heard good things about Barnes also but haven't tried them. May be worth experimenting in the offseason.

Even with the shockwaves and hornady's, most of the time it takes 25 yards or so for the blood trail to start but after that it's a good one.

I have seen first hand what the Barnes Sabots will do and it is impressive. Full copper and they do expand like this.

Nice buck and lots of activity. Here in Ct. the muzzleloader season goes until the end of the month and then winter bow for January. I use 100 grains of Pyrodex with Shockwave bullets. Very accurate and with the shotgun primers you get instant ignition.
