    Todd,

    Thank youfor contacting the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission regardingthe use of frame nets made out of monofilament. I was asked to respond to your questions onbehalf of Nick Wiley, Executive Director of the Commission.Managing fish and wildlife resources fortheir long-term well-being and the benefit of people is our agency’smission.To succeed in this mission wemust regulate our marine fisheries to the best of our ability; part of thistask includes working with and listening to the concerns of marine resourcestakeholders like you.

    It has come to attention thatrecreational frame nets as described in 68B-31.007(2)(b), F.A.C. are being usedto harvest shrimp with monofilament webbing. Unfortunately, frames nets usedwith monofilament webbing are a violation of Article X, Section 16 StateConstitution, 68B-4.0081, F.A.C., and Florida Statute 379.2422(2)(b). Thisamendment, which was adopted in 1994 by a majority vote of Florida’s Citizens,prohibits the use of gill or entangling nets. That said, FWC has and willcontinue to work with fishermen to allow for a variety harvest methods that areboth economically viable and allow for resource protection.

    If you have any questions please do nothesitate to contact me at 850-617-9629 or at Daniel.Ellinor@MyFWC.com.

    Sincerely,

    Dan Ellinor

    Hi Dan

    In response to the below, I noticed that you pointed out "prohibits the use of gill or entangling nets".

    According to 68B-4.0081 Statewide Net Gear Specifications;
    Any such net, with a mesh size greater than 2 inches stretched mesh shall be considered an entangling net for purposes of paragraph (a).

    This would mean that Shrimping Frame Nets with a mesh size less that "2 Inches" would Not be considered a entangling net

    Please let me know

    Thanks

  3. Sam, have you heard back from Dan? I emailed him Friday morn with the same "mesh size less that "2 inches"" question, He responded "as long as it wasn't made of mono it's legal". Not sure if he's correct.

    hey guys/gals, wanna hear something interesting? I went up to Sebastian inlet last night and got set up and started shrimping. and hour after we got started a fwc officer walked onto the dock and grabbed the rope to my frame net and pulled it in a little to look at it, a minute later he tapped me on the shoulder and asked me if I knew my frame net was illegal? I replied that we went thru this last year here on the dock and the officer that hassled us last year came back and apologized to us, he said he knew all about that and that he WAS that officer, but, that there was a change a couple weeks ago and that fwc is looking at any net made of mono as a entangling net except for cast nets. he told me tonight is only a warning but if I deploy this net again up there that I would be ticketed or arrested, he went up to his truck and downloaded and printed the paper that all fwc are to go by I have it here but have no clue as to get it copied to a computer and posted. i'll save it and hand it to anyone who would like to look at it and post it so our members can know, AND KNOWING IS HALF THE BATTLE ,GO JOE!

    Yes we are aware of this, thats what this whole thread is all about.

    All of the Shrimping Community knows who the self proclaimed person is who has brought this whole issue to the attention of the FWC and has published it in Coastal Angler Magazine so the FWC now has no choice but to enforce what they were not.

    Sound like a scam started by Captain you know who (**** Edited the name out ***). LOL. Anyways, IMO, those new net (some tough Oss material, call Poly something)are dangerous to Manatees and other boater. If a Manatee get caught in the net, the net wont brake off. And the manatees will drag your boat to other boater and sink everyone. Just my 2 Cent.
