Need Help - New To Cast Netting

Cast nets have roughly 1# of lead per foot of length (depending on the net maker and style of net). So 12' net will have two more pounds of lead to throw over the 10' net! Just my two cents.

Man I am blown away with the great advice and videos. I got a 8' bait cast net from a friend at work for FREE! smiley-signs130.gif I am practicing in the yard and plan to purchase a shrimp net after some more practice. Signed papers on a house in Ormond by the Sea, will be local in about two months. Can't wait!

Won't be long now and you'll be throwing perfect pancakes and doing a report of your own that you can share.

Free is the best price to pay for a net....... thumbsup.gif Depending on the mesh size of your 8 footer, you can use it as a shrimp net as well.

I have 2 cutom made cast nets from Ed Shumaker. My shrimping cast net is 10' and has lawn chair webbing sewn in to the mesh above the lead line so that it will help it to spread out more as it sinks. This is not a good net for catching bait though because it sinks so slowly. My bait net is 9' but has twice as much lead per foot as my shrimping net. It's heavy to throw, but bait cannot escape me once it's thrown.

The bait net has 1/4" mesh so that I can catch small bait like menhaden, mojarra and finger mullet. The shrimp net has 1 & 1/4" mesh so that the smaller shrimp wil get out (cull) and I can catch only the bigger shrimp.
