    Hello,

I'm based in Melbourne FL. Never really been into fishing but my dad and my brothers always have been so I've been around it. Since moving to the Melbourne area, I've read about how great the fishing is in the Indian River so I thought I'd give it a whirl. I've gone out a few times but all I catch is catfish so I guess I have allot to learn..

Head to the local tackle shops. I used to use Harry Goodes in Melbourne. They will tell you what is biting and help you rig to catch them. I used to troll around the pilings of the Melbourne Causeway at night and limit out on trout.
I also cast various mirrorlure baits at night and caught some real nice trout. Casting plastic tail jigs and swimbaits can also be real good in that area.

Thanks for the tip. I should have mentioned that I'm mainly fishing by canoe with a trolling motor these days so I'm thinking of staying in the low wake zones for now.

Any thoughts on the Sebastian river? I have done the trip from the canoe launch up river to the Dale Wimbrow Park Boat Ramp and I really enjoyed it. Wondered if that area is any good for fishing.

Tried putting in at Honest John's Fish Camp this past Sunday and got mauled by cat fish again. Tried live shrimp on a pop cork with various lengths on the leader but no matter where I casted a cat fish would snatch it in seconds.

Welcome to the site and fishing. I don't know many people that are new to fishing! But even those that have been fishing a long time are always learning something new every time we get on the water!

Welcome aboard! Totally agree with Harry, if you are in the right spot you can easily limit out on mangroves in the river. Thats sweet meat too and make some killer fish tacos!

Welcome to the forum! I’ve always had issues with catfish too. I gave up fishing in the Indian River and moved to the beaches. But I don’t have a boat so I’m always fishing from the shore. I have a lot to learn but I’m happy that I catch something other than catfish! Good luck!

If all u catch is catfish means your prob casting out too far. Most fish are right underneath you if ur on a pier. Try dropping straight down or fish near structure. Good luck man it gets better
