Not a bad day for me. Crazy with the heat of the day action and topwater at noon no less…
The usual slow few hours right after sunrise, but managed a total of 4 Reds (1 @ 27”), 4 Snook (1 @ 26”), a Jack and a Cat.
Right before sunrise I caught one nice Jack followed about 10 minutes later with a nice Red. Both were on topwater and both were the only hits that I got. Only boils or predatory activity I saw was right before I caught both of those. Sun rose right around the peak of high tide and I saw no more action at the first stop. For the next hour I worked my way back in through the marsh and didn’t see any predatory activity, and not a lot of baitfish… just big mullet jumping. Near 8:00 I had a good hit on the paddletail, set the hook and had something nice on for several seconds but then it came off. A few minutes later at the next intersection I picked up a little Snook on the paddletail. It was dead over the next few hours except for a handful of light taps, but no hook-ups. At 11:00 I was working my way through a really shallow creek and drifted over a couple of mud clouds. Then about another hundred feet ahead I saw a small slot-sized Red right on the bank and spooked him as I was going by. As I was making my way up the creek I was casting and trying various retrieves with an artificial shrimp and paddle tail with no success. At the end of the little creek where it joined a larger perpendicular creek, I saw another lower-slot Red right up against the edge of a Mangrove clump. I made a cast to that area and had a light tap but no hook-up. A few casts later and brought in another Red. I fished that area for about 20 minutes and kept getting light apprehensive taps on both a paddletail and an artificial shrimp. I got out the Procure and put it on the paddletail and I guess that’s what it took because the next cast instead of hit n spit, he hung on this time. Gave me a nice little fight and brought in another nice Red. I had a few more apprehensive strikes after that but couldn’t hook up on anything. Couple hundred yards up the same creek I came to the spot I’ve been doing well with some schooling Snook at another intersection with a couple of open pockets. Pretty dead with nothing happening. I fished for about 15 or 20 minutes longer than I normally would and didn’t get a single hit. Right as I pulled up my anchor pole I decided to make one more cast with the paddletail up in a big open pocket even though it looked kind of stagnant. Had a light apprehensive hit… A few more casts and one more light hit n spit. Switched back to the Spook and first cast there was barely a swirl, but I felt it and set the hook. It was a nice Redfish, and after a good fight brought him in and measured just under 28”. The largest one I’ve caught in a while. After I got him revived and sent on his way, my very next cast brought in another small Snook.
It was already after noon, so I started making a beeline for the house. About halfway home at the edge of a big flat where two creeks join and intersect, I saw a big boil. I slowed down, made a cast with my paddletail and had a little tap but no hook-up. On the third cast one nailed it hard I set the hook. Gave me a good fight and came out of the water several times. Turned out to be a nice 26” Snook. I spooked a couple small Reds at some random spots against the creek banks on the way home. Before I made it home I saw a little disturbance in the water in a little pond where I’ve caught some Reds before. Slowed down and made a cast... Got a hit and got the hook-up, but turned out to be a Catfish. That was the last for the day
