Making a in-ground Hugelkultur garden pit

Decided to do a in-ground Hugelkultur pit style test, which will start-out with below ground concrete block border, then cut logs, wood chips, compost etc...

the concrete block border will serve a few purposes, it will keep the beds aligned and allow for garden tunnel poles to in installed so you can put either sun shade of bug mesh over it.

Starting the Hugelkultur pits in my new garden section

    Chop and Drop plants

going to Grow a lot of Mexican sunflower plants for Chop and Drop mulching for Biomass Plant Fertilizer..

Mexican sunflower (Bolivian Sunflower) produces Nitrogen

Mexican sunflower, T. rotundifolia, is a vigorous, drought tolerant warm season annual that is easy to grow in the ornamental garden with other common names of red sunflower of just tithonia. Tithonia plants grow 4-6+ feet tall with a large central stalk and a somewhat gangly branching habit.

    Fakahatchee Grass. Produces Carbon
Fakahatchee grass brings a touch of native Florida into your landscape and adds texture to any yard. Sometimes called Eastern gamagrass, this plant forms a large clump that works well as an accent plant or planted as a border

    finished installing the logs

installed and finished the mulch layering

and that's how I made my Hugelkultur Inground Pit Bed, still need to layer compost on top for the plants to grow in.

Hügelkultur is a horticultural technique where a mound constructed from decaying wood debris and other compostable biomass plant materials is later (or immediately) planted as a raised bed. Adopted by permaculture advocates, it is suggested the technique helps to improve soil fertility, water retention, and soil warming, thus benefiting plants grown on or near such mounds.

My First Hugelkultur Inground Pit is done for now... will have to add about another foot of twigs, branches, Mexican sunflower plant and other stuff... wood chips turned into compost, then around 1 foot of organic compost, horse manure, sheep manure etc.

What a big project and a technique I had never heard of before. I have a large garden at a local Preserve where we have 900 acres and a lot of it is bottom land with good fields. I have a section that appears to be about as large as yours but it is not as well organized by any means as yours is. I use raised beds made out of five quarter boards. Some beds are two boards high and some are only one board high.
Do you think your Huguleculture technique, with buried wood underground and a raised bed like mine above ground, would work the same as what you are installing? What about the rotting wood eating up the soil nitrogen contents? I see from the description you are using the mexican sunflower to fix nitrogen so it that good enough or would I have to apply nitrogen. Clover and alfalfa will do the same in my area as a green fertilizer.
Very impressive project, the results should be spectacular.
