My neighbor turned me on to cleaning rusty fuel tanks with vinegar. It works great. Only problem was some of the rust came back immediately while I was letting it dry. It works even better on the rust if you use a green 3m pad.

This process works really well. I've used it old axe heads, hoes and miscellaneous items for some time. On heavily rusted tools/items it needs to soak in the vinegar for a day or two, a frothy, rusty foam will form on top of the liquid. For this reason it's best to perform the treatment in an area where the scent and potential for staining is not a issue. Sam' Club has 2-1 gal. jugs of vinegar for cheap.

You will want to rinse with a baking soda/water solution to cease any acidic action afterwards. When doing severely rusted tools (i.e. axe heads, hoes, rakes, etc.) I have had to leave them in the vinegar overnight.

Man, I had no idea. I already clean everything with vinegar, I keep a spray bottle of 50/50 water & vinegar around the house for generic cleaning purposes. This tip will come in handy!
