Went out Thursday to check cams - deer were more infrequent and diff travel from couple years ago.

Friday am - had nice buck come thru at 0900 - 35 yards, just walked on by. Saw for 2 - 3 seconds.
    Buddy saw 2 spikes.

Was in stand 14 hours - saw only that buck.

Moved in a little diff angle and closer for Saturday. He did not come thru.
Went for a scout and found a place to sit on Sunday.
    Buddy saw 0.

Saw a pig and a doe on Sunday.

    Buddy saw 0.

    Season is over.
Buddy has a permit in a couple of weeks.

Season over?? Jeez... I need to take a better look at that complicated Florida zone map and regs.

FL archery is usually 5 to 7 days per hunt. I work too much and only had 3 days to hunt on my permit. Hence my archery season ended.

Buddy has a permit in 2 weeks and I should be able to go. If not, then no more archery.

I turned in my 3 day ML permit cause of family visiting that weekend but do have a 3 day rifle hunt in Nov. if you only get 3 days and it is buck only - you had better be on the money cause there is not a lot of time to readjust.

FL hunting sucks on many different levels.

On the positive side - I hunted 13 years straight without seeing a legal deer on FL public land. Last tag I had, shot 1. This tag saw a mature FL buck and then relocated and seen doe and hog. Starting to see stuff anyway...

This is the buck I saw. Might get another opportunity come rifle season if I can get him on camera with any regularity.

So are there public or private tracts that are open the entire season? I’m assuming the limited permits and quotas are required only for the management areas? Glad you are seeing more deer. Guess all that explains why so many Florida folks head up to Ga to hunt leases. Need to get you up here to hunt one of these days.
I need to change my residency back to Ga for a year so I can buy the lifetime license. Still kicking myself for screwing up and forgetting to do that before I got my FL drivers license...
Has been raining and looks like it will continue use to rain the rest of this week. I’ve been lazy and haven’t been back out since Saturday. May not get back out u til Saturday when black powder opens.

Leases and private land have longer seasons.

some hunt areas go free for all after first week or two. Ocala is one of those and I think bull creek. Maybe the lake Monroe hunt area.

can hunt st John’s flood plain all season too.

high energy, high traffic hunts. Eh. They can have it.

I’ll stay with the hunts every 3 years and low competition at wmas.

Yeah, sounds similar to up here. When I wasn’t on a lease I would try to hunt the less popular management areas. Had a couple that had low traffic and if you stuck to the steep mountain areas could stay away from the idiots for the most part. Never got much into the quota hunts. Always talked about it but usually never followed through on the years I didn’t have a good private option.

Hunted this past weekend - saw a whole lot of nothing. Saturday was hot.

Sunday was a nice day to veg in a tree. Had a deer between me and buddy blowing at me - I couldn't hear it but buddy said it was and that it run by him. An almost.

Had an owl at about 8 feet, took his picture and we hung out for a bit until he eased on out looking for breakfast. Had no fear or even concern about me. Very neat interaction.

Gonna say we had a good 5 days of archery hunting - buddy seen 2 deer and a bunch of hogs, I seen 2 deer and a hog. That's not too shabby for FL hunting. Woulda been nice to bring something home but not to be the case.

Also, gonna turn in the rifle permit. No longer on the deer (even with the game cameras) and no idea where they went - not gonna be able to scout any more. No sense wasting a permit and dragging my father around in the woods if I can't put one of us on a deer. Will try it again next year.

We got ducks and fishing coming. Still have some venny from last year. maybe 50# so should be good til next year.

Well, you have it a good try anyway. At least you got to see some. The owls are cool. I had one a few years ago that landed in the tree next to me and gave me the eye until the sun came up. Was a big boy.

Never know what’s gonna happen in a deer stand. Often you come home w memories.

we see a rocket launch on Saturday while driving in at 0530 and then the owls on Sunday. Neat stuff.

I imagine a great horn owl to be a sizable bit bigger than my barred owl buddy.
