How To Determine A Fish’s Weight? - Weight Formula

Have you ever wondered how much the fish you just released weighed? You can accurately figure the weight of those fish by using this formula which is in inches. This formula is extremely accurate! Of course, you could carry a scale!

    Girth x Girth x Length / 800 = weight in pounds

Example: If the fish’s girth is 15 inches and its length is 29 inches, the formula would be used as follows: 15 x 15 x 29, divided by 800 = 8.16 pounds.

BTW: The Professional Tarpon Tournament on the west coast uses this same formula instead of dragging the tarpon to shore to weigh it. Each boat has a tape on a pole that slips over the tarpon’s head to measure his girth. The observer then calculates the weight and calls it in to the weighmaster.

I haven't tried the formula on a flattie!

You can get a fairly accurate estimate of the weight of a fish (in pounds) without having to remove it from the water. Take the following measurements in inches. Measure the length of the fish from the lower jaw to the fork of the tail. Measure the girth by going all the way around the fattest part of the fish. If you can only measure the fish from one side, take the full measurement from top to bottom and double it.

Use the following formula to determine the weight of the fish.
For example, let’s say you just caught a red drum that measured 29 inches fork length. The girth measured 15 inches.

    Girth x Girth x Length / 800 = weight in pounds
Example: If the fish’s girth is 15 inches and its length is 29 inches, the formula would be used as follows: 15 x 15 x 29, divided by 800 = 8.16 pounds.

    How To Measure fish
Do you know how to measure fish?

Did you know that there are different ways to measure certain species of fish?
A couple inches could make the difference of getting a heavy fine if stopped!
Most size limit regulations of the FWC use either Fork Length or Total Length. (Click Here)
