    DIY How to make your own fishing sinkers


    Started by getting out my Burner, gas tanks, lead melting pot, lead ladle, lead, and lead sinker molds.

    Started up the burner, put lead into the lead melting pot, put some cardboard around the burner to keep the wind from blowing on the flame.

    tried to take pics along the way so that I could post them...

    Wow. That’s a serious stockpile you’ve got there. Do you wear a respirator while working?

    I bought some of the “Sputnik” style surf weights from a local guy last month. I was not familiar with those, or had seen them until this year. Hadn’t been surf fishing for 30 years... Pretty neat design. Would not have thought a couple wires would really help hold in the sand.

    I went ahead and cleaned some up
    mostly #8 #10 #12 #14 and #16

    The eggs sinkers were #14 and #16
    the banks were all sizes

    Still have to clean up the smaller ones.

    That's a lot of pounds of lead in them there sinkers.

    You need to grease your rod LOL

    You want to grease the rod that goes throw the Egg Sinkers, so it comes out easier.

    Hey Sam, I used to pour sinkers and jigs for tackle shops, and I found that using synthetic motor oil (any brand) worked very well to lube the mold hinges and pins. It would not "smoke off" like the grease does. And, it stays on a very long time. You just need a very small amount too.

    it helps also if you soot up the empty mold with a torch before pouring....The weight releases from the mole better when done....

    Question: Could I use the new wheel weights that are not lead anymore? I forget what they are mostly now.

    Zinc melts at a much higher temp but I’ve heard that it can mess up your casting pot if you do accidentally melt some thinking it was lead. Steel would be a problem melting in the setups most people have.

    The egg sinker mold I have has a copper-color rod that goes thru the middle. It has a wooden dowel handle on end - I find a simple twist of the rod totally releases it from the lead. Never used grease or anything like that on the rod.
