Regarding the tide changing from outgoing to incoming if the bugs are running fairly steady before the change stick around a bit, because everything
that went past you on the outgoing will be coming back at you as the tide picks up incoming. I've done well in the past several times after the tide
change, slack tide can be crazy time because they'll be coming from all directions

Simply by using two anchors and two long anchor line. Drop your stern into the water first, as you are letting out your anchor line, pop your boat in gear and fact your bow into the current, and head into the current on a slight angel and you will be parallel to where you want to drop your bow anchor. now both anchor lines are slack and your boat will drift back with the current... now tighten up both anchor lines till you are in the position you want to be and tie the anchor lines off tight with no slack.

They have poly line called blue steel which floats. It doesn’t have any real stretch so it’s not great for hurky-jerky situations but it is inexpensive. Used it a lot in Hawaii for deep water.

you do not want to use floating rope, because you may have to drop your anchor rope into the water fast so you can move when a barge comes. It will get caught up in the barges prop.

First I get an idea where I want to anchor using my depth finder, and a visual reference.
Now I position the boat on a path that crosses perpendicular to the anticipated outgoing current. If the current is already flowing you have to adjust your path at an angle to compensate for the current flow.
I use 100' of rope for my bow and stern anchors. Make sure the end of the anchor rope is attached to the boat before you start so you do not lose your expensive anchors. As a safety I added a float with my name and phone number on it to the end of my anchor rope. I have a smaller looped rope attached to the end of my anchor rope so I can quickly secure the rope to my cleat. It is also so I can quickly disconnect it from my cleat. In the event that an emergence arises I can quickly disconnect my anchors and just throw the rope into the water and be free to move in a hurry. Things happen on the river like the barge coming. If you anchor is stuck and the barge is comeing, or you did not see the barge coming until the last moment, or someone up stream breaks loose and is headed out of control right for you, or someone falls overboard. Just throw the anchor rope with the float into the water and get underway in a hurry, and come back when it is safe to retrieve your anchors.
Back to anchoring.
Using judgment I place the stern anchor into the water, and pay out the line while idling forward. I have 50' marked on the rope. when I get to the 50' mark with the engine in neutral I place the bow anchor in the water. Pay out about 25' of line for the front anchor and attach it to the cleat. Take up about 25' on the stern anchor rope and attach it to the cleat. Hopefully you are now perpendicular to the current with your anchor ropes at about a 30 degree angles off the bow and stern.
When the current picks up let out more rope. I believe the anchor rope angle formula is 7 feet of rope for every foot of water. So 10 feet deep takes 70 feet of anchor rope. The steeper the angle the less holding power the anchor has. Also if you did it right you can move forward and back a little by adjusting the ropes.
This takes a lot of practices. Best to arrive early so not to have to deal with to many obstacles. Don't feel bad if it takes a few times to get it right.
I use danforth anchors that are oversize for my size of boat. I also have at least 4 foot of heavy duty chain on each anchor. The attachment point is able to slide on the anchor. If you hail Mary these anchors overboard it is a crap shoot that they will land correctly on the bottom in order for it to dig in as they are designed. If they land messed up they will slip and you have to do it again. It is real hard to get guests not to fling the anchor overboard as hard as they can. Hold by the rope and feed it out a bit before and just releasing it.
